Air Fryer French Fries (Homemade and Frozen)
Crispy air fryer French fries: homemade ¼-inch fries at 380°F for 15–20 minutes, or frozen fries at 400°F for 12–18 minutes. Times for every cut.
Quick answer
Cook homemade French fries in the air fryer at 380°F195°C for 15–20 minutes, cut ¼ inch thick, soaked, dried and tossed with 1 tablespoon of oil. Shake the basket every 5 minutes. Frozen fries take 12–18 minutes at 400°F205°C, straight from the freezer, with no oil or thawing needed. Thin shoestring fries cook faster and thick steak fries take longer.

Times are for a preheated 5–6 quart basket air fryer with food in a single layer. Oven-style and very large air fryers can run 1–3 minutes slower. Always check doneness with an instant-read thermometer.
Air fryer French fries come out golden and crisp outside and fluffy inside, with about a tablespoon of oil instead of a pot of it. Homemade fries take a little prep, but the result is close to restaurant fries. Frozen fries are even easier: they go straight from the bag into the basket and crisp up in about 15 minutes.
How to make French fries in the air fryer
- Cut the potatoes into even ¼-inch sticks.
- Soak them in cold water for 30 minutes to rinse off the starch.
- Dry them very well, then toss with a tablespoon of oil and salt.
- Air fry at 380°F195°C for 15–20 minutes, shaking every 5 minutes.
- Salt again while they’re hot, and serve.
How long to cook French fries in the air fryer
Homemade fries at 380°F195°C:
- Shoestring, ⅛ inch: 10–14 minutes
- Regular, ¼ inch: 15–20 minutes
- Steak fries, ½ inch: 18–24 minutes
Frozen fries at 400°F205°C:
- Shoestring: 10–14 minutes
- Regular cut: 12–18 minutes
- Crinkle cut: 14–18 minutes
- Steak fries: 16–20 minutes
How full the basket is matters as much as the cut. A loose layer cooks fastest. A heaped basket takes longer and needs more shaking.
Frozen French fries
Frozen fries are made for the air fryer. They’re already par-fried, so they need no oil and no thawing. Spread them in the basket straight from the bag, and air fry at 400°F205°C for 12–18 minutes, shaking two or three times. A 2-pound bag usually takes two batches in a 5–6 quart air fryer.
For extra crunch, give frozen fries a very light spray of oil halfway through. Season them as soon as they come out, while they’re still hot enough for the salt to stick.
How to get crispy homemade fries
- Use russet potatoes. They’re starchy, so they crisp outside and stay fluffy inside.
- Cut them evenly so they all finish at the same time.
- Soak for 30 minutes, then dry thoroughly. This is the biggest difference between soggy and crispy fries.
- Don’t overcrowd. Cook in batches if the fries are piled up.
- Shake every 5 minutes so every side gets browned.
- Finish hot. A final 2 minutes at 400°F205°C gives extra crunch.
Sweet potato and carrot fries
Sweet potato fries cook at 380°F195°C for 12–16 minutes when cut ¼ inch thick. They have more sugar, so they brown faster and don’t get quite as crisp. See our sweet potato guide. Carrot fries are a lighter option: cut carrots into ¼-inch sticks, toss with oil and salt, and air fry at 400°F205°C for 12–16 minutes, shaking halfway.
Seasoning ideas
- Classic: salt, the recipe below.
- Garlic parmesan: toss hot fries with grated parmesan, garlic powder and parsley.
- Cajun: 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning with the oil.
- Truffle: a drizzle of truffle oil and flaky salt after cooking.
- Seasoned: paprika, garlic powder and onion powder, like seasoned restaurant fries.
What to serve with fries
Fries go with burgers, frozen burgers, fish for fish and chips, or jalapeño poppers for a game-day spread. For chunky roast potatoes instead, see air fryer potatoes.
Storing and reheating
Refrigerate leftover fries for up to 3 days. Reheat at 380°F195°C for 3–5 minutes, shaking halfway, and they’ll crisp up again. See our reheating guide.

Ingredients
- 2 large russet potatoes (about 1½ lb)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable, canola or avocado oil
- ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to finish
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (optional)
Instructions
Tap a step to check it off.
- Cut. Scrub the potatoes, and peel them if you like. Cut them into ¼-inch slices, then into ¼-inch sticks, keeping them as even as you can.
- Soak. Put the fries in a bowl of cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes. This rinses off surface starch so they crisp instead of sticking together.
- Dry. Drain the fries and dry them very well with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Any water left on them will make them steam.
- Season. Toss the dry fries with the oil, salt, and the garlic powder and pepper if using.
- Preheat. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F195°C for 3 minutes.
- Air fry. Spread the fries in the basket in a loose layer, cooking in batches if needed. Air fry for 15–20 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes, until golden and crisp.
- Serve. Toss with a pinch more salt while they're hot, and serve right away.
Notes
- Russet potatoes make the crispiest fries with fluffy insides. Yukon golds work too, and are a little creamier.
- For the crunchiest fries, finish with 2 minutes at 400°F205°C.
- A 5–6 qt basket fits about 1 lb of fresh-cut fries per batch.

Frequently asked questions
How long do you cook French fries in the air fryer?
Homemade fries cut ¼ inch thick take 15–20 minutes at 380°F195°C. Frozen French fries take 12–18 minutes at 400°F205°C. Thin shoestring fries cook in 10–14 minutes and thick steak fries take 16–24 minutes. Shake the basket every 5 minutes.
How do you cook frozen fries in the air fryer?
Spread them in the basket straight from the freezer, with no thawing and no oil needed. Air fry at 400°F205°C for 12–18 minutes, shaking two or three times, until golden and crisp. Frozen chips and fries are already par-fried, so a light spray of oil is optional.
Do you need to soak potatoes before air frying fries?
It's not essential, but it makes a real difference. Soaking cut fries in cold water for 30 minutes removes surface starch, so they crisp up instead of turning gummy or sticking together. Dry them very well afterwards.
Why aren't my air fryer fries crispy?
Usually the basket is too full, or the fries were wet. Cook them in a loose layer, dry them thoroughly after soaking, use a little oil on homemade fries, and shake often. Overcrowded fries steam instead of crisping.
What temperature do you air fry fries at?
380°F195°C for homemade fries, so the insides cook through before the outsides get too dark. 400°F205°C for frozen fries, which are already partly cooked and just need to crisp.
Do you need oil for air fryer fries?
For homemade fries, yes: about 1 tablespoon per 1½ pounds helps them brown and crisp. Frozen fries don't need any, because they're coated in oil at the factory.
What are the best potatoes for air fryer fries?
Russets. Their high starch content gives fluffy insides and crisp outsides. Yukon golds make creamier fries with thinner skins. Waxy red potatoes don't get as crisp.
How do you reheat fries in the air fryer?
Spread leftover fries in a single layer and air fry at 380°F195°C for 3–5 minutes, shaking halfway. They come out almost as crisp as when they were fresh, unlike in the microwave.
