Whole Turkey in the Air Fryer: Time Per Pound & What Fits

How to cook a whole turkey in an air fryer oven: 350°F for about 12–15 minutes per pound, which size fits, and how it compares to deep-frying and roasting.

By Air Fryer Kitchen Editorial TeamUpdated September 26, 2026

Quick answer

You can air fry a whole turkey only if it fits, which usually means a small 8–12 lb bird in a large air fryer oven. Cook it at 350°F175°C for about 12–15 minutes per pound, starting breast-side down and flipping halfway, until the breast, thigh and wing all read 165°F74°C. A standard basket air fryer won't fit a whole turkey, so cook a turkey breast or legs instead.

Times are for a preheated 5–6 quart basket air fryer with food in a single layer. Oven-style and very large air fryers can run 1–3 minutes slower. Always check doneness with an instant-read thermometer.

Air frying a whole turkey sounds like the ultimate shortcut, and for the right size bird it works well: crisp skin, juicy meat and a faster cook than the oven. The catch is space. Before you plan Thanksgiving around it, check whether your turkey will actually fit.

Will a whole turkey fit in my air fryer?

  • Basket air fryers (4–8 qt): No. Even the largest baskets are too shallow for a whole turkey. They fit a 3–4 lb turkey breast, which is the best air fryer option for most households.
  • Dual-basket air fryers: No for a whole bird, but you can cook turkey legs in one basket and sides in the other.
  • Large air fryer ovens (about 25 qt and up): Often yes, for a turkey of about 8–12 lb. Measure the interior and leave at least an inch of clearance on all sides.

If your turkey is bigger than about 12 lb, roast it in the oven at 325°F165°C. Use our turkey cooking time calculator for the exact time by weight.

How to air fry a whole turkey

  1. Thaw it completely. A partially frozen bird cooks unevenly. Allow 24 hours in the fridge per 4–5 lb.
  2. Dry it well and season under the skin. Dry skin is what makes it crisp.
  3. Cook at 350°F175°C, breast-side down first. This protects the breast while the dark meat catches up.
  4. Flip halfway and finish breast-side up to brown the skin.
  5. Check three spots with a thermometer: breast, innermost thigh and wing, all at 165°F74°C.
  6. Rest for 20–30 minutes before carving.

Food safety essentials

  • Don’t stuff it. In an air fryer, the stuffing can’t reach 165°F74°C before the meat overcooks. Bake stuffing in a separate dish.
  • Wash hands and surfaces after handling raw turkey. Don’t rinse the turkey itself, because that spreads bacteria around the sink.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. Eat them within 3–4 days or freeze them.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole turkey (8–12 lb), fully thawed, giblets and neck removed
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme or poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 onion and 1 lemon, quartered (optional, for the cavity)

Instructions

Tap a step to check it off.

  1. Check the fit. Before seasoning, set the turkey in your air fryer oven's drum or rack. You need at least an inch of space on every side and above it. If it touches the heating element or door, cook it in the oven instead.
  2. Prep and season. Pat the turkey very dry inside and out. Mix the salt and spices, brush the bird with oil or butter, and rub the seasoning all over and under the breast skin. Tuck the wing tips under and tie the legs together. Place the onion and lemon in the cavity, if using. Don't stuff the turkey.
  3. Cook breast-side down. Preheat the air fryer oven to 350°F175°C. Cook the turkey breast-side down (or on the rotisserie, if your model has one) for half the estimated time, about 6–7 minutes per pound.
  4. Flip and finish. Turn the turkey breast-side up and continue cooking, about another 6–8 minutes per pound. Tent the breast with foil if it browns too quickly.
  5. Check the temperature. It's done when a thermometer reads 165°F74°C in the thickest part of the breast, the innermost part of the thigh and the innermost part of the wing.
  6. Rest. Transfer to a cutting board, tent loosely with foil and rest for 20–30 minutes before carving.

Notes

  • Never stuff a turkey cooked in an air fryer. The stuffing won't reach a safe 165°F74°C in time. Bake it separately.
  • Thaw in the refrigerator: allow about 24 hours for every 4–5 lb.
  • Carryover heat raises the temperature a few degrees while it rests.

Frequently asked questions

Can you cook a whole turkey in an air fryer?

Only if it fits. A small 8–12 lb turkey fits in some large air fryer ovens, especially rotisserie-style models. A regular basket air fryer is too small for a whole bird, but it fits a 3–4 lb turkey breast perfectly.

How long does it take to air fry a turkey?

At 350°F175°C, plan on about 12–15 minutes per pound: roughly 2–2½ hours for a 10 lb turkey and 2½–3 hours for a 12 lb turkey. Always go by internal temperature (165°F74°C), not just the clock.

What size air fryer do I need for a turkey?

For a whole turkey, you need a large air fryer oven with at least about 11 × 11 × 9 inches of clear interior space, usually labeled 25 quarts or more. For a turkey breast, a 6 qt or larger basket air fryer is enough.

How long do you deep fry a turkey per pound?

In a traditional oil fryer at 350°F175°C, a turkey takes about 3–4 minutes per pound, so roughly 40–55 minutes for a 12–14 lb bird. Deep frying needs a dedicated outdoor fryer. Never deep fry a frozen or partially thawed turkey.

What about an oil-less turkey fryer?

Oil-less turkey fryers are outdoor infrared cookers, not countertop air fryers. They typically take about 10–15 minutes per pound. Follow the manufacturer's guide and check for 165°F74°C.

Is it better to air fry or roast a turkey?

Air frying is faster and gives crispier skin, but it only works for small birds. For a turkey over 12 lb, or if you want to stuff it, roast it in the oven at 325°F165°C. Our turkey cooking time calculator gives the oven time by weight.
