How to Clean an Air Fryer: Basket, Inside and Heating Element
How to clean an air fryer: the basket after every use, baked-on grease with baking soda, the inside and heating element, and whether the basket can go in the dishwasher.
Quick answer
To clean an air fryer, unplug it and let it cool, then wash the basket and crisper plate in hot soapy water with a soft sponge. For baked-on grease, soak them for 15–20 minutes or scrub with a paste of baking soda and water. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth, and gently brush the heating element when it's cool. Never submerge the main unit, and skip steel wool and oven cleaner, which damage nonstick coatings.

An air fryer is quick to clean if you do a little after every use. Grease that’s left to bake on through several cooks is what turns it into a chore, and it’s also the most common reason an air fryer starts to smoke. Here’s how to handle everyday cleaning, stuck-on grease and the parts you can’t see.
How to clean an air fryer after every use
- Unplug it and let it cool. Wait until the basket is warm, not hot. Warm grease wipes away more easily.
- Empty the drawer. Pour off any fat, or wipe it out with a paper towel.
- Wash the basket and crisper plate in hot, soapy water with a soft sponge.
- Wipe the drawer, inside and out.
- Dry everything before putting it back.
Is the basket dishwasher-safe?
Many are. Most Ninja, Cosori, Instant and Gourmia baskets and crisper plates can go in the dishwasher, but check your manual. Hand washing is gentler on nonstick coatings, so if your basket is dishwasher-safe, alternate between the two.
How to remove baked-on grease
- Soak the basket and crisper plate in very hot water with a few drops of dish soap for 15–20 minutes.
- Make a paste of 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of water.
- Scrub gently with a soft brush or a non-scratch sponge. An old toothbrush reaches the holes in the basket.
- Rinse and repeat for stubborn spots, rather than scrubbing harder.
Never use steel wool, metal scouring pads or oven cleaner. They scratch and strip nonstick coatings. See are air fryers toxic? for why a damaged coating matters.
How to clean the inside and heating element
Do this about once a month, or whenever you see splatter on the element.
- Unplug it and let it cool completely.
- Remove the basket and drawer.
- Wipe the inside walls with a damp cloth and a drop of dish soap, then a clean damp cloth.
- Clean the heating element. Some manuals say you can turn the air fryer upside down to reach it. Brush it gently with a soft, dry brush to loosen bits of food, then wipe it with a barely damp cloth.
- Let it dry fully before plugging it back in.
Never submerge the main unit or run it under the tap. It contains electrical parts.
Cleaning an air fryer oven
Air fryer ovens have more parts but the same idea. Wash the racks, mesh trays and drip tray in soapy water after greasy cooks. Wipe the door glass with a damp cloth and a little baking soda paste, and wipe the interior walls once cool. Avoid spraying cleaner directly toward the heating elements or fan.
Cleaning the outside
Wipe the outside with a damp cloth. For fingerprints on stainless steel, use a cloth dampened with a little white vinegar and water. Keep the air vents clear of dust and grease.
How to keep an air fryer cleaner
- Use liners for messy foods. Perforated parchment or a small piece of foil catches sticky glazes and drips.
- Empty the grease straight away after cooking bacon, burgers or sausage.
- Don’t use aerosol cooking spray. Many brands warn it can build up a sticky residue on nonstick baskets. A refillable oil sprayer or a brush works better.
- Wipe splatter while it’s fresh. A quick wipe after cooking saves a scrub later.
Signs it’s time for a deep clean
- White smoke while cooking, which is usually grease burning in the drawer.
- Old smells carried into new food.
- Visible splatter on the heating element or inside the top of the unit.
- Food sticking to a basket that used to release it easily.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you clean an air fryer?
Wash the basket, crisper plate and drawer after every use, especially after fatty foods. Wipe the inside of the unit every few uses, and give it a deeper clean, including the heating element, about once a month or whenever you see grease buildup.
Can you put an air fryer basket in the dishwasher?
Many baskets and crisper plates are dishwasher-safe, including most Ninja, Cosori and Instant models. Check your manual first. Even when it's allowed, hand washing helps nonstick coatings last longer, because dishwasher detergent is harsh on them over time.
How do you clean baked-on grease from an air fryer basket?
Soak the basket in hot water with dish soap for 15–20 minutes. Then scrub with a paste of 2 tablespoons baking soda and 1 tablespoon water, using a soft brush or non-scratch sponge. Rinse and dry. For stubborn spots, repeat the soak rather than scrubbing harder.
How do you clean the inside and top of an air fryer?
Unplug it and let it cool completely. Wipe the inside walls with a damp, soapy cloth, then a clean damp cloth. To reach the heating element at the top, some manuals allow you to turn the unit upside down. Brush the element gently with a soft, dry brush, then wipe it with a barely damp cloth.
Why is my air fryer smoking?
White smoke usually comes from grease in the drawer burning, especially after cooking fatty foods like bacon or burgers. Empty the grease and clean the drawer. Black smoke means something is burning, often food stuck to the heating element. Unplug it, let it cool and clean the element.
Can you use oven cleaner on an air fryer?
No. Oven cleaner is caustic and damages nonstick coatings and some plastics. Stick to dish soap, baking soda and, for the outside, a little white vinegar on a cloth.
How do you get rid of the smell in an air fryer?
Clean the basket and drawer thoroughly, since leftover grease is usually the source. Then wipe the inside with a cloth dampened with equal parts white vinegar and water, and let it air out with the drawer open. A lingering smell after fish usually fades after the next clean.
